Parool: ‘Bank in de problemen, te gul voor Bouterse’
De economische crisis die nu al twee jaar lang huishoudt in Suriname, dreigt in een bankencrisis uit te monden. De failliete overheid kan grote sommen geleend geld niet terugbetalen aan De Surinaamsche Bank. Deze is met veertig procent marktaandeel de grootste retailbank van het land en balanceert op het randje van de afgrond.

Stel: je bent een steenrijke zakenman, maar met jouw Iraanse of Somalische paspoort kan je bijna geen enkel ander land bezoeken zonder allerlei tijdrovende visumprocedures te moeten doorlopen. Of je wilt minder inkomstenbelastingen betalen zonder de wet te overtreden. Hoe pak je dat aan?
Saint Lucia, een piepklein maar beeldschoon eilandje met 160.000 inwoners in het oosten van de Cariben, biedt een oplossing. AP: ‘Prosecutor calls for 20-year sentence for Suriname president’
A prosecutor on Wednesday recommended a 20-year prison sentence for President Desi Bouterse for his role in the December 1982 killing of 15 prominent political opponents in this South American country.
Prosecutor Roy Elgin told a court in a summation of evidence from a trial that has dragged on for years that there is sufficient proof that Bouterse was present when troops under his command summarily executed opponents of his then-military dictatorship.
The executions of union leaders, activists and journalists inside a colonial fort in the capital city of Paramaribo are referred to in Suriname as the “December killings,” and are considered one of the most significant political events in the country’s modern history.

Een stijging van de brandstofprijs met 10 procent, die vorige week is doorgevoerd door de regering van Desi Bouterse, was de druppel die de emmer deed overlopen en duizenden Surinamers de straten van Paramaribo opjoeg. “Met honderd Surinaamse dollar tankte ik vroeger mijn auto vol,” zegt de gepensioneerde Robby Wong Fang Sang. “Na alle devaluaties en prijsstijgingen kom ik nog amper tot de helft. En de regering beseft het niet eens, want die tankt gratis.”

AP: ‘Protests disrupt French Guiana, prompt US travel warning’
Large protests have spread throughout French Guiana, blocking roads to neighboring Brazil and Suriname and prompting the U.S. government to issue a travel warning Friday for the French territory in South America.
Hundreds of people have taken part in protests over high crime, the cost of living and anger at the quality of social services such as health care. The Collective of 500 Brothers, the group largely behind the unrest, is demanding that the French government send a minister to negotiate with them, according to spokesman Ken Saint-Luce.
